LDC in the Community

LDC was among the thousands on Philadelphia’s Parkway on Saturday, April 28, 2018 with its booth at the Philadelphia Science Festival “What language is that?”.

Three language-oriented educational activities were featured:

Language Recognition: participants played LDC’s NIEUW game ‘Name that Language’. Each player listened to an audio sample and guessed the language spoken from a set of possible answers.

Name Transliteration: an activity that generated name tags in one of five ancient alphabets. Once participants selected their alphabet, LDC staff phonetically transcribed their name into the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and then transliterated it into the requested alphabet – Cuneiform, Hieroglyphics, Ogham, Phoenician or Runes.

Chinese Character Recognition: a game where participants were shown clues to a Chinese character’s sound and meaning components and were asked to select the correct combination of graphs from four multiple choice questions.

Over 500 visitors stopped by the booth and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, as did LDC staff.

The Philadelphia Science Festival is an annual event organized by Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute to acquaint children and adults with the joys of science. Over 35,000 people attended the carnival this year.
