Synonyms for CYP enzymes

Many CYP450 enzymes are known by a number of names that don't include "cyp" or "450" or "cytochrome". We are trying to list them so you can tag them as cyp when you see them. Here's a start, thanks to Dalal. The codes in brackets refer to source and synonym set: all the terms marked "[NCI-1]" are listed in the NCI metathesaurus as synonyms, and so on.

I've removed the names that contain "cytochrome" or "cyp" or "P450", since those are obvious. But I've kept some of them in a list at the bottom of this page to illustrate the variety of ways that even these self-labeling names can be structured.

Some of the listed synonyms, taken straight from authoritative references, are trivial spelling variations:

Steroid 11beta hydroxylase Cytochrome P-450(scc) cholesterol monooxygenase
(side-chain cleaving)
Steroid 11-beta-Hydroxylase Cytochrome P450scc cholesterol monooxygenase
(side-chain-cleaving)

The Enzyme Commission has a standardized system of numeric identifiers and recommended names for enzymes. Below is a list of the codes they list as belonging to CYP450 enzymes. The corresponding recommended names are in the list immediately below.

Non-obvious Synonyms

Non-synonyms

Once you start recognizing non-obvious synonyms for CYP450 enzymes, you will start noticing some names that look similar to known non-obvious synonyms but which actually are not names of CYP450s. Here are a few:

A note on "activity"

Many abstracts talk about measuring "XYZ activity" or "XYZ hydroxylase activity". Strictly speaking, they are not measuring the level of XYZ or XYZ hydroxylase, but in practical terms this is how the enzymes we are interested in are often measured. "In any P450 citation, when hydroxylation activity is mentioned, it is referring to CYP." This is part of the discussion in the e-mail archive:

The following terms for CYP and substances show up in this abstract:

When they are talking about "hydroxylase" they are talking about CYP, otherwise they are referring to the substrate the enzyme is acting on.

As a result of this discussion we determined that
     * these terms ending in "hydroxylase" should be tagged as CYP450
** the other terms in this list should be tagged as Substance
