Topic: Hurricane George Sweeps Carribbean Islands

Summary

On September 20 and 21, 1998, Hurricane George, a Category 3 storm, struck 17 islands in the northeast Carribbean. At least 500 people were killed and more than 100,000 people were left homeless in the Dominican Republic alone. Property damages were estimated at more than 5 billion dollars.

Hurricane Categorization

Hurricanes are categorized according to their wind speed. The standard scale is a 5-category scale called the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.
