The Seminal Event:

Investigations (and resulting trial) into the American embassy bombings in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. The twin bombings occurred August 27, 1998, killing over 260 people, the vast majority of which were Kenyan . It is believed that the bombings were part of an international effort headed by Osama bin Laden. Indeed, Osama bin Laden was indicted on 238 counts for plotting the embassy attacks.

Timeline:

August 7, 1998Nearly simultaneous bombings of American embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, killing over 260 people.
September 28, 1998Khaled Al Fawwaz arrested by British authorities and is accused of conspiring with bin Laden in the bombings.
October 8, 1998Mohamed Rashed Daoud Al-'Owhali, Mohammed Saddiq Odeh, and Wadih el Hage pleaded not guilty to a sweeping indictment that charges them with conspiring to kill Americans in Saudi Arabia and Somalia in addition to the embassy bombings.
November 4, 1998US indictment issued for Osama bin Laden on 238 counts for plotting and executing the attacks on American embassies in Africa through his Afghanistan based terrorist group, al Queda.
December 22, 1998Time conducts interview (published in Jan. 11 issue) with bin Laden at his secret encapment in Afghanistan. He was specifically asked if he was responsible for the embassy attacks. Here is his reply. "If the instigation for jihad (holy war) against the Jews and the Americans... is considered a crime, then let history be a witness that I am a criminal... Our job is to instigate, and by the grace of God, we did that, and certain people responded to this instigation."
July 11, 1999Ibrahim Hussein Abdel Hadi Eidarous, 42, and Adel Mohanned abdul Almagid Bary, 39, were arrested by British authorities on an extradition warrant following a request from the United States. They are charged with conspiring with bin Laden in the American embassy bombings.
