Summary

After the government headed by Mesut Yilmaz fell in a corruption scandal, President Suleyman Demirel appointed Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, pronounced [bülent´ ejevit´], to assemble a new government in Turkey. Ecevit's initial attempt to form a new government was unsuccessful after failing to receive sufficient parliamentary support. Following his comfortable win in the April general elections, Ecevit won a vote in confidence in parliament and successfully formed Turkey's new three-party coalition government.
