The Linguistic Data Consortium at the University of Pennsylvania has immediate openings in a variety of part-time positions, both work study and non-work study. The LDC provides a diverse, stimulating and friendly working environment, with ample opportunity to develop professional, technical and linguistic skills.

Native speakers of Arabic, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish for linguistic annotation and transcription. Transcribe news programs, talk shows and meetings, and label texts for linguistic phenomena.

    Native speakers of Panjabi, Tigrinya, and Yoruba to help develop basic linguistic resources.

    Fluent Arabic and Mandarin Chinese speakers to audit daily broadcast recordings for quality and content.

    Fluent Arabic-English or Chinese-English bilinguals to review professional translations for quality and completeness.

    Experienced programmers to work in Python, C, Perl, Java and SQL, with HTML, XML and Unicode data in Solaris, Linux, Windows and CGI environments.

    Skilled administrators to provide general clerical support, handle special projects and assist with marketing and customer service; and recruiters to enlist and register partipants for speech research studies.

    Skilled audio/visual technicians to help run audio and video recording sessions for multi-modal data collection projects.

Administrative Support

The LDC Business Office is looking for a team player with a willingness to learn, prior experience with MS Office, and strong attention to detail to join our vibrant Business Office. The administrative support role provides top notch administrative support. We have several administrative opportunities available to Federal Work Study student workers for the academic year and summer sessions. We offer competitive wage, flexible work time between regular business hours.

Linguistic Annotators - Chinese, Arabic and Spanish

Join our annotation team and develop linguistic databases to support automatic speech recognition, machine translation, information retrieval and related technologies. Responsiblities may include transcription of news broadcasts, business meetings or talk shows; labeling of spoken language phenomena like disfluencies, speech errors, syntactic structure and prosody; and labeling of entities, relations and events in news texts.

This position requires speaking/listening, reading and writing fluency in Spanish, Modern Standard Arabic or Mandarin Chinese (simplified Chinese), excellent English skills, strong attention to detail, basic computer skills, and willingness to learn new skills. Transcription positions require excellent typing skills. Interest in languages or linguistics is a plus. 10-20 hours/week (more possible during the summer); $10-11+/hour; flexible weekday schedule.

Linguistic Annotators - Panjabi, Tigrinya, and Yoruba

Seeking native speakers of Panjabi, Tigrinya, and Yoruba to help develop basic linguistic resources. Responsibilities include labeling news documents for topical relevance, building databses of named entities, time expressions and other linguistic phenomena, and checking translation quality.

This position requires native speaker ability (including reading and writing ability), solid spoken and written English, and basic computer skills. Positions start immediately; 10-20 hours/week; flexible weekday schedule; $14/hour.

Broadcast Auditors - Chinese and Arabic

Help build and maintain LDC's database of broadcast recordings from around the world.  Responsibilities include listening to news  and talk show broadcasts and assessing quality and content. 

This position requires speaking/listening, reading and writing fluency in Modern Standard Arabic or Mandarin Chinese (simplified Chinese), basic computer skills and the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.  This position requires a regular working schedule; 10-20 hours/week; $10/hour; flexible weekday hours.

Translation Assistants - Chinese and Arabic

Fluent bilingual Chinese/English or Arabic/English annotators are needed to help develop a database of parallel text.  Tasks include reviewing Chinese or Arabic news documents that have been translated into English, and identifying word and sentence pairs that match between the two documents.

This position requires a high degree of reading and writing fluency in both the target language -- Arabic or Mandarin Chinese -- and English. Chinese applicants must be comfortable reading and writing simplified Chinese.  Qualified applicants will possess strong attention to detail, basic computer skills and an interest in languages or linguistics. 10-20 hours/week; $10/hour; flexible weekday hours.

Programmers

Technical Assistant
Responsibilities include writing scripts for text processing, manipulating corpora, and building tools and resources for linguists.  Must be able to use a scripting language (shell scripts, perl/python, etc.) on a *nix environment (Unix/Linux/FreeBSD). Basic knowledge of Unicode and fluency in Unix/Linux operating systems is a plus.

Positions start at $14/hour, 10-20 hours/week.  Must be eligible to work for the University of Pennsylvania.

Annotation Tool Development (Work-study)
The appointee will design and develop annotation tools in Python and/or Java for semi-structured and multimodal data using LDC's new software toolkit. Duties also include: preparation of multimodal data, software documentation, interaction with end-users, participation in project meetings. We would like a highly-motivated computer science student who has strong programming skills, strong analytical skills, good organization and communication skills, and an ability to work independently. The student will gain valuable experience in multi-component software tool design and implementation in a research environment. Work study only; 10-20 hours/week; flexible weekday schedule; $11/hour.

Speech/Video Processing
Programmers needed to help with a massive broadcast audio/video collection project (2TB per month). Candidates will schedule recordings, work with C-band and Ku-band satellite receivers, and work with digital video recorders. Some programming skills (Perl, python, Oracle) necessary. Candidates will be required to work with A/V matrix switches, audio and video digitization hardware, Windows 2000 and Linux servers, a 24TB tape library, and multiple satellite receivers. They may also be called upon to assist in the specification and purchase of new equipment. Strong problem solving skills, organization skills, and communications skills, both written and spoken, are essential.

Technical Support
A/V Technicians
Help with a research project involving multi-modal data collected from group meetings. Candidates will assist in the installation of computer hardware and A/V equipment; preparation of the recording rooms, coordination, monitoring and documenting recording sessions; post-processing of recorded audio and video and tracking and use of audio and video equipment. The ideal candidate will be technically savvy and comfortable working with informants when needed. Because the work involves recording sessions that are made by appointment, candidates must be organized and very reliable. Candidates will be required to work with audio routers, mixers, a DAW, video cameras/camcorders, multiple microphones/microphone arrays. They may also be called upon to assist in the specification and purchase of new equipment.
